Local History

There are about 10,000 mineral and rock specimens in the museum's collection.  In the permanent exhibit  you will find a sampling of the  major mineral groups--silicates, oxides, sulfides and carbonates among others--and an introduction to the three rock types.  Additional displays illustrate some of the diagnostic properties and economic importance of minerals. An exhibit on Long Island geology shows its geologic foundation, history and resources as well as a guide to the rocks you might find in  your back yard.  A spectacular fluorescent mineral display glows in vivid colors.
